SAMPLING METADATA

Sampling and Processing Summary

Notice of Subsetted Data:
The data available here is only a five-year (1995-1999) subset of the significantly larger Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) Survey database that runs 60+ years.   Individuals looking for the full data sets should the CPR Survey directly with all inquiries ( https://cprsurvey.org ).

Comparison of CPR data with other COPEPOD data sets:
The CPR is a small mouth-opening, high tow speed, surface-only sampling device.   Zooplankton and phytoplankton together are captured using a 270 um mesh net.   Each sample represents plankton collected over a 10 nautical mile horizontal section of water.

  • Data users are urged to take caution when quantitatively comparing CPR-collected plankton abundances with other data sets that used larger mouth nets and/or non-surface tows.
