About Fisheries Data

In order to protect and conserve our shared marine resources, we must have a holistic understanding of what is happening in our oceans at any given time. Both recreational and commercial fisheries information are important parts of this picture.

  • The Marine Recreational Information Program, in cooperation with state and regional partners, collects recreational fishing data through a system of sample surveys. Click here for a brief description of how MRIP collects data from recreational fishermen.
  • The Fisheries Statistics Division gathers commercial fisheries data collected by state and regional partners for national summary level reporting. Click here for a brief description of how NOAA collects commercial fishing data from the commercial fishing industry.

FIS is working to ensure stock assessment scientists, fisheries managers and other stakeholders can easily and efficiently find the accurate, high-quality fisheries information they need, so we can effectively steward our ocean resources.
