SAMPLING METADATA

Sampling and Processing Summary
Saldanha Cruise 07:   This cruise used a "no. 20 conical plankton net". Based on other Saldanha cruises, and the range of the biomass values, this is assumed to be a "no 20 fish mesh" (0.20 millimeters = 200 micrometer). A "no. 20 silk" would have a mesh <80 micrometers, and is uncharacteristic of the other fisheries-based Saldanha cruises. Horizontal tows (filtering ~137 cubic meters of water) and vertical tows (made to approximately 150 fathoms = ~274 meters). The volumetric biomass is assumed to be "settled volume" (rather than displacement volume).

Saldanha Cruise 08:   This cruise used the same methods as Cruise 07.

Saldanha Cruise 31:   This cruise used a plankton net 0.8 meters diameter and 2 meters in length, with a 125 micrometer mesh. A horizontal tow was made (filtering ~100 cubic meters of water), then vertical tows were made above and below the thermocline ( 0 - ~35 meters, ~35 meters - ~75 meters). Biomass was provided as "volume por decantacao" (volume of decantation). This was translated as "settled volume".

Saldanha Cruise 36:   This cruise used a plankton net 1 meter-square mouth area and 2 meters in length, with a 125 micrometer mesh. A horizontal tow was made (filtering ~100 cubic meters of water), then vertical tows were made above and below the thermocline ( 0 - ~35 meters, ~35 meters - ~75 meters). Biomass was labelled as "cm3-sedimen". This was translated as "settled volume".
