Group Summary Page
The Group Summary page repeats (and expands upon) the simple barcoding statistics shown on the main menu.   The species listed on this page are specific to the taxonomic group and geographic region that is currently selected.

A new map in the corner shows coverage data for the selected taxonomic group and geographic region.   As before, light blue dots indicate where members of this group have been observed, red stars indicate where barcodes have been sampled for this group, and dark gray shows areas excluded from this summary and its statistics.   In this example, we are looking at North Atlantic "Calanoida" (species of calanoid copepods, commonly found in the North Atlantic).

Group Regional Summary:

The upper left table summarizes the number of species found, the number COI-barcoded, and the number of species without COI barcodes.

    • There were 524 species of Calanoida in the North Atlantic, 212 of these species have been barcoded (in any ocean, but of these 128 species have barcodes from within the North Atlantic itself).

    • There were 312 species that had no publicly available COI barcodes at all, from any ocean.

These COI barcode data are available from in the "MZGdb Data Download Options" link, found below the map.   Note that each taxa group and regional summary has its own customized download link, and that MZGdb counts and packages the barcode data in two inclusion "Modes".

    • "Mode-A" includes barcodes from any ocean (even from outside of the North Atlantic), for which there were 8332 COI barcodes (representing 212 species).

    • - - - >   In most cases, you will want to download and use the "mode-A" MZGdb data set.
For maximum barcode matches, you also probably want to use the "world" (o00) files.

    • "Mode-B" includes only barcodes from the North Atlantic, for where there were only 1366 COI barcodes (representing 128 species).   Remember that the location of these North Atlantic-only barcodes are represented by the red stars in the upper right map.

    • "Mode-C / Mode-D" results are not shown in this table. "Mode-C" data is any-ocean data like "Mode-A", but it can include sequence records only identified to Genus level.   "Mode-D" is specific-ocean data like "Mode-B", but likewise include Genus-only sequence records.   The "Mode-C / Mode-D" data can also contain uncertain species identifications like "Calanus aff. finmarchicus".

Individual Species Summary Table:

Below the regional summary and map is a table of all species found in the current taxa group and region (e.g., the 524 calanoid copepod species common to the North Atlantic).   In this example, this table will have at least 524 rows (one for each species), and each row will list the species and COI barcoding status for that species.   Each row also includes a map that shows where the species was observed (and barcoded) in the North Atlantic.

The default "Species-only Summary" table view lists (only) the species names in alphabetical order.   Clicking on the "Full Taxonomic Hierarchy" table will expand the table to list the full taxonomic hierarchy.   This expanded listing provides additional statistical information that reports the barcoding status by order, family, and/or genera.   In this example, the expanded table could be used to see the COI barcoding coverage of the family Acartiidate or Centropagidae, or at a single Genus.
