PhotoQuads of Benthic Coral Reef Environments

Description: Benthic images of coral reefs are taken using a Canon Powershot 1200 SD. Each image is taken from an altitude of 1 meter above the seafloor, using a monopod. Photos are taken in natural lighting, without the use of a strobe. Images are collected every 0.5 meter along two separate transect lines at each site, for a total of 30 images per site. 

Each image is divided into ten sectors and a single random X,Y coordinate is generated for each sector. The benthic component at each coordinate is classified using a code file.

purpose: The purpose of the photoquads is to provide estimates of percent cover for each benthic component.
