Order 13158 calls
for the national development of a network of marine
protected areas (MPAs). Currently,
there are 33 MPAs in which fishing is restricted all
year and numerous more seasonal closures. The increased reliance on marine-managed areas to govern
fisheries coupled with the mandated economic analyses
that must be conducted to implement fishery regulations
has resulted in NOAA Fisheries increasingly implementing
spatially-explicit economic models to assess the both
economic benefits and costs generated by MPAs as well
as how these impacts will be distributed across society. |
