Each row in the NMFS-COPEPOD "Short Form" data format is an individual observation set.   An observation set can be a single-depth biomass tow, one depth of a multiple-depth biomass tow, or a single taxa (out of many)counted in a tow.   Within each row, each column contains multiple comma-separated data fields.

Below are the column headings and contents of each data field:

    SHP-CRUISE   -   NODC ship code and NMFS-COPEPOD cruise identifier

    YEAR   -   year of the tow or sample

    MONTH   -   month of the observatin/measurement

    DAY   -   day of the tow or sample

    TIMEloc   -   LOCAL time of the tow or sample (decimal hours)

    LATITUDE   -   latitude of the tow or sample (+ = North, - = South)

    LONGITDE   -   longitude of the tow or sample (+ = East, - = West)

    UPPER_Z   -   upper depth (range) of the tow or sample

    LOWER_Z   -   lower depth (range) of the tow or sample

    MESH   -   net mesh size (micrometers - um) used

    ITIS_TSN   -   ITIS Taxonomic Serial Number (TSN) (if < 0, then NMFS-COPEPOD-SN)

    GPDB-BGC   -   NMFS-COPEPOD Biological Grouping Code for the observation

    BSC   -   NMFS-COPEPOD Biological Staging Code for the observation (coming soon)

    T   -   Type of measurement in the Count/Biomass Field
      B = Biomass
      C = Count,
      L = Biomass (where large plankter (e.g. jellyfish) were NOT removed before measurement)

    COUNT/BIOMASS   -   count or biomass measurement of the observation

    UNITS   -   Units of the count or biomass measurement

    QF   -   NMFS-COPEPOD Quality-Flag for the observation

    SCIENTIFIC NAME -[ modifiers ]-   -   full description of the observation

    RECORD-ID   -   NMFS-COPEPOD unique record identifier

    DATASET-ID   -   NMFS-COPEPOD data set identifier
