SAMPLING METHODS SUMMARY

Zooplankton were collected by NORPAC net with a GG54 mesh (~330 micrometers) and a flowmeter.   The tow was started at one meter from the bottom (via echosounder) and then hauled to the surface at a speed of 1 meter per second.

Phytoplankton were collected with another NORPAC net with NXX-13 mesh (~100 micrometers).   The tow was started at ten meters depth and hauled to the surface at a speed of 50 cm/sec by hand.

All plankton samples (both types) were immediately preserved in 10% formalin and sorted upon return to Japan.
