NOAA Environmental impacts of hurricane katrina

Upcoming: In the coming weeks, NMFS will field a series of surveys to more accurately assess the damages caused by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. To this end, NMFS has already placed contractors in the field to assess the damages to marine-related infrastructure in selected Gulf communities. In conjunction with this effort, NMFS will conduct a more in depth sociocultural survey of fishermen in each impacted state. To get a better understanding of economic impacts on firms, NMFS will also attempt to contact selected seafood-related operations in each state. For the recreational fishing sector, NMFS will conduct a survey and analysis of the recreational fisheries to more accurately assess economic losses. An additional source of impacts may be caused by consumer perceptions that Gulf seafood is not safe for consumption due to chemical and bacterial contamination. NMFS will survey seafood consumers to analyze changes in seafood consumption patterns to determine whether consumers are altering consumption patterns due to fears of potential contamination in Gulf seafood products.
