Steering Committee

The EcoGIS Steering Committee was formed in January 2005 and is co-chaired by Steve Murawski of NOAA Fisheries and Mark Monaco of the NOS Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment.

Members of the committee are:

  • Steve Atran, Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council
  • Steve Copps, NMFS Northwest Regional Office
  • Chad Demarest, New England Fishery Management Council
  • Tom Hoff, Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council
  • Tony Lavoi, NOAA Coastal Services Center
  • Tom Noji, NMFS Howard Marine Sciences Lab
  • Joe Powers, NMFS Southeast Fisheries Science Center
  • Roger Pugliese, South Atlantic Fishery Management Council

The committee met on February 10, 2005 to prioritize issues addressed by the project. The top priorities identified were area characterization, fishing effort mapping and displacement analysis, and bycatch hotspot identification.

The EcoGIS Steering Committee provides the following guidance to the project:

  • advises project staff on priority management and science issues for the near-term and future years
  • facilitates on-site vists from NMFS and NOS staff to document needs and establish data sharing contacts
  • reviews documents that define the science and management issues that can be addressed by GIS tools
  • coordinates activities of the EcoGIS project with GIS activities in partner organizations
