EcoGIS Plans/Timeline

The next steps for the EcoGIS project are:

  • Work with the Fishery Management Councils, NMFS Science Centers and other NMFS and NOS staff to understand and document the near- and long-term GIS functional requirements of fishery managers and scientists (through June 2005)
  • Assess the data needs for the project; inventory and evaluate the quality, timeliness, and spatial resolution of these data sets (through June 2005)
  • Develop prototype GIS tools to demonstrate solutions to the needs expressed in the functional requirements document (by October 2005)
  • Develop fully functional GIS tools to meet priority needs (by October 2006)
  • Research the role of GIS and geospatial data in an ecosystem approach to management. Publish Milestone Report detailing project history, progress, findings, and future recommendations (by May 2008).
